Grow your own mushrooms and more
Hi, I'm Jon (nope, not Mike). Welcome to Mike's Mountain Mycology. We're named for the base of the mountain in Oregon where I live and breath mycology. (You won't find it on Google maps, but it's pretty special to me).
About two and a half decades ago, I started growing micro algae for Oregon State University. Working with researchers, I discovered the world of mycology and never looked back. I'm a member of the Oregon Mycological Society (OMS) and the North American Mycological Association (NAMA).
While mushrooms foragers are notorious for being secretive and hording information about mushrooms and where to find them, I believe there's room enough for everyone in the mushroom community. As such, in 2021, I began formally sharing my knowledge with others.
This includes my daughter, Kajsa. If you have teens, you know how hard it is to find activities that you both can share. I'm so lucky to have a daughter who loves going out on forays with her dad. I'm proud to say that she's become an expert herself, with her own Youtube page where she shares her knowledge of the fungal world. [Youtube]. As her dad, that's a legacy that means so much.
